.JPG files vs .PNG files

Can someone tell me what is the difference between these two files? 

I see sometimes people will share in both formats.  Why?

I prefer .png files for printing. I use .png files whenever I can.

Some programs that I use do not let me use .png files, so I end up having to convert them anyway, if I want to use them in my program. I just open the file, resave it as a .jpg and then I have the image twice (once in each format). I only do this for files I am using right away. I do not convert every file on my computer.

As an example, I use the FREE Avery Label Program, called Design Pro 5 Limited. I am unable to see/use any images that are in .png format.

I send proofs to customers in .jpg format. The files are smaller (better for e-mailing), and the files are not meant to be printed anyway. They are just for viewing, and checking for errors.
