I signed up for Carbonite AFTER I lost a LOT of candywrappers when my external hard drive crapped out on me. I also cried! LOL I vow to never EVER let it happen to me again. A nightmare, I tell ya!

After the "Great Crash of '07" when I lost everything I went witn an external drive and loved it, but then it started giving me trouble. Last year I switched and went to Carbonite. It runs about $40-50 a year but google for coupons and you can get 3 years for about $103, I just did.

It shows you which items: pictures, programs, data, etc. is pending backup and which is backed up. My only caution - I have a contact management system backed up on carbonite. I inadvertently screwed it up and, unfortunately, it sent the screwed up version to Carbonite. Not Carbonite's fault, it did what it was supposed to do. But, with over 300 contacts and all their info, I now save a copy to my hard drive and DON'T back up that version and then let the other get backed up by Carbonite, just to be doubly sure.

When I import photos from my digital camera for resizing, I've put 2 folders on my desktop and I don't back them up. I import to folder 1, then resize and send them to folder 2. Once I've enhanced, etc. and move them to their final destination folder, I then have it backed up there. That way I'm not messing around with multiple copies of the same pics if I need to restore.
