Cutting - What to use - Printers and paper
« on: January 31, 2008, 02:06:49 AM »
Hi

I've just printed off a label which I will be using for the top of a round box. I used the tool box round shape and sized it to what I need. I am assuming it is similar to your paint can lids. Does everyone just use scissors to cut the round out or is there something out there that can be used.

Also I am looking at purchasing another printer as I would like a printer that can pull through card, mine struggles. Anyone got any suggestions for a printer that doesn't have problems with card?

And my third question - when I have printed and cut a single label from the paper/photopaper or whatever, my printer will not let the recut paper through, it just jams. Any suggestions to get round this.

Thank you in advance.

Berni

There is a cutter out there called robo cutter (but it is costly)
now when i had my candy store i used a lot of different labels
and did a lot of paint cans
Pan Cans i used just white paper and siccors to cut them and glue sticks to stick them on the can

I had candy boxes that i would put different labels on and as you might know cutting them yourself they just do not look professional
(the edges)
so what my husband and i came up with was using pinking shears
the craft stores have all kinds of siccors with different edges for scapebooking so we use them
we use to buy label sheets
the whole page was sticky
or if we need just one and did not want to waste a whole sheet of sticky paper we use just white paper and glue stick
never had any complaints
hope this info helps

For anything straight I use a ruler and a cutter.

For round edges I just wing it with the scissors.

Even with the craftrobo, I still cut my lids and round labels with scissors.  I have more control over the shape.

As for printers with cardstock, just about any photo printer will handle cardstock pretty well.  For economical reasons, we bought an HP Photosmart because there are 6 cartridges.  If I print a lot of red, I don't have to throw out a half empty ink cartridge to replace the magenta ink.  Each color of ink costs about $10 (the black is twice as large and costs about $17).  It works very well and the ink dries very quickly.  Some other folks might be able to recommend some other printers that work well for you.

As far as re-running paper through, it will jam in just about any printer.  If you know that you need to do multiple labels, you can adjust the size of your page and print both at the same time to use the entire page.  I do this a lot of the time with paint can lids and when making mintbook and mini samples.

For straight cutting I have a guillotine ( might have misspelt that) which I love and would not be without. For round cutting definately sissors. There is a trick to nice cutting with sissors and that is to guide the paper or card around and not so much the sissors.

As for printers and card stock, as Heather said, most will take it. But some of the ones that feed from the bottom tray and go up and around may be troublesome. But if it feeds from the back and sort of straight through most of those should be fine.
I do a lot of printing on card and presently have a no frills Epson C79. Although it is noisy it is great to work with.
Definately try for a printer that has multiple individual inks rather than just a single colour cardridge and a  black one.

hope this helps
It's okay to talk to yourself, even to answer yourself ...but if you find yourself asking yourself what? Then maybe you should worry.

Hi

I've just got back from holiday and wanted to thank all the people who took the time to answer my questions. Sorry I couldn't get back to do this before now but stupidly I asked the question then went away.
Thanks again. Berni
