Printer paper
« on: May 10, 2010, 12:46:00 AM »
I have tried all different types of paper to wrap with and am using Asdas photo paper for my labels. It gives a really good glossy finish and costs £2.24 for 20 sheets. (Less than 6p for a 100g label). Has anyone found anything better than this and where from? I'm using an inkjet printer and the only problem I have is that on some labels the black ink smudges when I fold it but it only happens with some labels and not others (!) So I don't know if thats the ink, the paper or the design. I'm wondering if I can cut costs but not quality with the paper.

Hi Shawn
I seem to have a problem with black ink on most of the paper i have used i have a button on my inkjet that you can set for glossy paper it helps a bit.
I used to use paper from the chocolate wrapper factory was 115 gms so quite thin which i really liked but the black smudged a lot which was rather annoying. now i have started using semi gloss paper which is much better on the black i have to leave it to dry for a bit which makes it alot less smudgy.
this i have found to be the cheapest  from play.com its hp but £5 for 25 sheets.
I also try and stay away from black as much as i can which is hard
i wish there was a thin glossy smudge proof cheap paper but hey im still looking

Hi Haley, That actually works out dearer. The Asda photo paper is very good and it's easy to get! The ones that smudge are the bookmarks posted by pod and there was a diva bar in black and white, it looked like flock wallpaper and there was a black-on-pink design as well. it seems to be just that type of design, black on a colour, that smudges. It's a pity because they are beautiful designs. I was hoping someone has found a paper that is thinner than photo paper but with a gloss or sheen. I asked a local printer about 'brochure paper'but he said you can only get it for a laser printer now. Never mind, let's wait and see if anyone else posts.

Shawn I use HP everyday photo paper for bars, 170 grams. I found that if you adjust your printer settings for photo, too much ink is used. Use regular printing settings for this paper, prints better. They cost 12 euros for 100 sheets 1+1 free here in Greece so actually 1/2 price. This is semi-gloss paper works very well for wrappers. Also, I think it was Hearts or Patti who said that if you use your wrapper in the first 15 mins or so, the ink doesn't smudge or flake when paper is bent (mintbooks etc). She was right, I tried it.

Thanks Stacey, I'll give that a try. My printer is set to auto detect, I'll try re setting it and see if it works with the black to stop the smudging.

Hi

I had the same problem. I orinially had a HP Inkjet but it wasn't very good quality. I went to PC world and they recommended a Cannon Photo Printer. The black ink seemed to smudge and was not drying even a day later! I tried glossy, semi gloss and normal paper but it still didn't seem to dry completely. The next day I took the printer back and had a refund, for an extra £90 I bought a Samsung Laser.

It's brilliant although I would have bought a far better quality one if I'd had the cash (It was £186 with scanner) but it does the job and no more smudges. I personally get my paper from Staples. I buy semi gloss laser paper which is about £8 for 250 sheets but they also have a good range of inkjet paper, it seems the best that I have tried  :)
